AVelasquez Inducted as Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing Practitioners (AANP)

Donna Velasquez

Donna Velasquez, PhD, RN, FNP-BC, Clinical Associate Professor, was inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) on Sunday, June 29, 2008, at the 23rd Annual American Academy of Nurse Practitioners' Conference at the Gaylord National Resort in National Harbor, Maryland.

Dr. Velasquez was lauded for her many contributions to nurse practitioner practice, education, research and health policy. She was sponsored by Sally Reel, PhD, RN, FNP, BC, FAAN, FAANP, Associate Dean for Academic Practice (2004), and Judith Berg, PhD, RNC, WHNP, FAAN, FAANP (2003).

She joins Ted Rigney, MS, RN, ACNP, NP, CCRN, Assistant Director, Nurse Practitioner Program (2007) and Deborah Vincent, PhD, RN, Clinical Associate Professor (2004) as an FAANP. Following the ceremony, she was honored at a reception and dinner.

AANP was formed in 1985 to provide Nurse Practitioners with a unified way to advocate for NP issues. As the largest and only full-service national professional membership organization for NPs of all specialties, AANP represents more than 125,000 NPs and continually advocates at local, state, and federal levels for the recognition of NPs as providers of high-quality, cost-effective, and personalized healthcare.

The FAANP program was established in 2000 to recognize NPs who have made outstanding contributions in healthcare practice, research, education and/or policy, and to facilitate leadership within the NP profession. An FAANP top priority is the development of mentorship and leadership programs for NPs.
Donna, congratulations on your achievement!

Ron Canham Takes Home "Louise"

Ron Canham, "Louise", and Judith Brown

Ron Canham purchased the winning raffle ticket for Tone Andresen’s beautiful sculpture, Louise. The raffle was part of the UA College of Nursing Advisory Board‘s Campaign for Excellence to raise $100,000 to support faculty recruitment and retention.

Ron is no stranger to nursing. From 1986 – 1996, he was the Director of Human Resource Development at Carondelet Health Network, where he worked closely with nurse educators, nursing supervisors and nursing directors. When College of Nursing Advisory Board member, Nancy Quebedeaux-Faulkner asked him to buy some raffle tickets to support the College, he was happy to oblige.

Stay tuned…another campaign is scheduled for later this summer. If you are interested in helping the Advisory Board as it undertakes its next project to support nursing student scholarships, please contact Judith Brown, Director of Development and Community Affairs, at jbrown@nursing.arizona.ed or
