Medication Education, Decision Support, Reminding and Monitoring System (MEDSReM). The Multifaceted Prospective Memory Intervention (MPMI) was tested in older adults ≥ 65 years of age and improved adherence by 35%.  The MPMI was efficacious over the short term, but after an additional 5 months without the ongoing presence of the interventionists, adherence declined. The aims of the current study are to listen to older adults and the challenges they face taking medications as intended through structured interviews and complement the successful strategies in the prior study with findings from the interviews to build, test and modify a mobile application (App) and companion website, the Medication Education, Decision Support, Reminding and Monitoring System (MEDSReM).  The intent is to make the strategies continuously available to patients through technology in order to prevent the drop off of strategy use and consequent decline in adherence.  Priority Score: 23 pending council review.

“(PQ9): Profiling miRNA to Elucidate Epigenetic Mechanisms of CNF Treatment-Related Neurocognitive Sequelae in Children with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.”  Childhood survivors of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia decline in particular neurocognitive abilities, yet knowledge about underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms is lacking.  Using an expression profile of miRNAs known to regulate genes involved in oxidative stress and apoptosis in the brain; associate miRNA profiles with phenotypic biomarkers and CNS treatment intensity; and determine if the miRNA expression profile predicts neurocognitive decline.

Role: Co-Investigator.

“Multifaceted  Prospective Memory Intervention to Improve Medication Adherence.” This project tests the effect of a multifaceted prospective memory intervention on improving medication adherence for older adults who are prescribed at least one daily antihypertensive medication.  The intervention is compared to an education only group.  Participants are initially screened for percentage adherence to the scheduled medication and followed for six months post intervention.    Role: Principal Investigator

“Cognitive Aging and Everyday Remembering”

This investigation examined the risk for nonadherence to prescribed medication among older adult using a composite of cognitive measures considered to tap prefrontal function and a composite of medial temporal measures.  Findings indicate that the prefrontal composite was the only significant predictor using a simultaneous regression model with all predictor variables included (β = .44).  Age was not a significant predictor of nonadherence although age and prefrontal composite were correlated (r = .19).
