Prior to initiation of any project, class, testing procedure, or any other use of animals, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) must review and approve the use of the animals. The first step in this process is to submit an Animal Protocol Review Form (Protocol) along with any necessary addenda to the College of Nursing Office of Nursing for review and signature prior to submission to the IACUC Office. When the Protocol is approved, the IACUC Office sends the Final Verification of IACUC Review to the investigator, who then submits the Verification memo to the granting agency (if applicable).
- Complete the Animal Protocol Review Form. The form can be found at http://www.iacuc.arizona.edu.
- Submit the completed form and any necessary addenda to Alice Pasvogel (Office of Nursing Research room 410) or e-mail to pasvogel@nursing.arizona.edu.
a. If a Sponsoring Agency is listed, include a copy of the methods section of the proposal that was submitted for funding.
All material must be included to facilitate the review process. The Office of Nursing Research will review the form and may request additional information or recommend changes.
- The Office of Nursing Research will send the material to the College of Nursing Departmental Review Committee.
- The Departmental Review Committee may request additional information or recommend revisions to the form. One of the Committee members will review the changes.
- The Office of Nursing Research will obtain the signature of the Department Head and send the documents to the IACUC.
Approval is generally for a period of 3 years. The PI will be e-mailed an Annual Review Form from IACUC that must be completed.
At the 3-year Re-review, complete the Animal Protocol Review Form and submit to the Office of Nursing Research for review.
MANDATORY TRAINING REQUIREMENT FOR ANIMAL USERS
Prior to the start of any animal activity, all Principal Investigators, faculty, students and research staff who use live vertebrate animals in research or instruction are required to complete training. To obtain IACUC certification, investigators and all personnel involved in any research project using animals must complete Laws and Regulations and Introduction to Animal Hazards Program Modules. No access to the animal facilities will be granted unless the training has been completed.
It is the responsibility of the PI to ensure that all personnel listed on the PI’s animal use protocol complete the required training in animal care and use.
All individuals listed on IACUC Protocols must take Laws and Regulations and the Introduction to Animal Hazards Program modules. Those actually working with animals must take the module for each of the species with which they work (species-specific). Those doing survival animal surgery must take the Surgery module. The Protocol & Animal Ordering Program tracks the species for which individuals are certified. When a new species is requested, individuals are required to complete the new species modules. More information about the training and the specific modules can be found at http://www.iacuc.arizona.edu/training/. Submit evidence of training to the Office of Nursing Research.
