The following review process applies to new proposals and resubmissions
All faculty members who plan to submit an external grant should participate in the Think Tank and Mock Review Process. All federal proposals, as well as comparable foundation proposals, need to undergo a mock review.
The Team:
The Think Tank and Mock Review Team (MRT) is composed of the Dean, the Associate Dean for Research, the ONR statistician, the Sorensen Endowed Professor, and the Principal Investigator’s Division Director. Other reviewers may be invited if additional expertise is needed, please provide a list of names to ONR. If a mock review takes place in another department, the PI‘s mentor should be invited to attend.
The Meetings:
Think Tanks and Mock Reviews are usually scheduled in one and one-half hour blocks of time on Wednesdays from 2:00 to 5:00 pm in Room 349. Please contact ONR to schedule time for the review.
Meetings are conducting using the WebEx technology available in Room 349. WebEx is an easy way to exchange ideas and information with anyone, anywhere. It combines real-time desktop sharing with phone conferencing, so everyone sees the same thing as you talk.

New proposals:
• A one and one-half hour Think Tank to review the Specific Aims should be scheduled approximately six to eight weeks before the grant submission deadline. The PI should send the draft to ONR by 8:00 am on the Friday before the meeting. The MRT will review the one page Specific Aims to evaluate significance, clarity, scope, logical progression, innovation and realism of Aims. Methods to meet the Aims may also be discussed at the meeting.
• A one and one-half hour Mock Review should also be scheduled at least four weeks before the grant submission deadline. The PI should send the draft abstract and completed proposal draft to the ONR by 8:00 am on the Friday before the meeting.
Resubmissions:
• A one and one-half hour Think Tank to discuss the PI’s response to the reviewers’ comments should be scheduled approximately six to eight weeks before the grant submission deadline. The PI should send the draft of the proposed response to the reviewer's comments, the review summary sheet, and the original proposal to the ONR by 8:00 am on the Friday before the meeting.
• A one and one-half hour Mock Review is then scheduled at least four weeks before the grant submission deadline. The PI should send the draft of the abstract and completed proposal draft to the ONR by 8:00 am on the Friday before the meeting.
