Promoting Health in a State of Disarray

Theresa E. Towle, DNP, FNP-BC, CNRN

Adjunct Faculty, College of Nursing
University of St. Francis, Joliet, Illinois
Loyola University Chicago, Maywood, Illinois

Dr. Towle is a family nurse practitioner working toward expanded access to health care in her home state of Illinois. With the expansion of the Affordable Care Act, health insurance coverage is accessible to hundreds of thousands more residents; however, out-of-control state debt and subsequent failure to pay has led to a scarce supply of public aid services. Moreover, prohibitive state laws restrict nurse practitioners from providing care without the authorization of a physician. Subsequently, those residents who now have the ability to access health services no longer have the services available to access.

Over the past several years, Dr. Towle has been working with legislative and nursing leaders across Illinois to remove restrictions on APRN practice and expand health care access to those in need. She also works to promote APRN business development while minimizing competitive environments with physicians through the use of interprofessional skills and principles. She began her work with interprofessional models while completing her DNP at Rush College of Nursing and remains committed to educating students about the use of interprofessional principles for avoiding error and providing comprehensive patient care.

Dr. Towle currently teaches as adjunct faculty for Loyola University Chicago and University of St. Francis in Joliet, IL. She serves as a member of the Illinois Coalition of Nursing Organizations and is the government relations/PAC chairperson for the Illinois Society of Advanced Practice Nursing. Through these organizations, she has been actively involved in recommending changes to the Illinois Nurse Practice Act in preparation for its sunset in 2017.

Dr. Towle graduated with her BSN from Indiana University in Gary and with her MSN in the family nurse practitioner track from St. Xavier University in Chicago. She went on to obtain her DNP in Health Systems Leadership in 2012 from Rush College of Nursing. Most recently, Dr. Towle received the 2016 AANP State Advocate Award for Illinois for her continued work to remove barriers to APRN practice and expand access to health care in Illinois.
