BSN-Direct Admit and Pre-Nursing majors who are completing their final nursing prerequisite courses will undergo the Advanced Standing Process to determine their eligibility to progress to the professional phase of the BSN curriculum. The Advanced Standing Process occurs each September and February.
To be eligible for Advanced Standing, students must meet all the Continuing Eligibility Criteria:
- Take only U of A courses and courses approved by the Transfer & Articulation department as direct equivalencies, including high school coursework.
- Earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 in all college-level coursework.
- Complete each nursing prerequisite course with a grade of at least B.
- No more than two prerequisite courses may be in progress at the time of the Advanced Standing Conference.
- Abide by the guidelines of the U of A Repeating a Course & Grading for Repeated Courses policy.
- Become eligible for Advanced Standing within five semesters (Fall and Spring) or submit an exception request form if more than five semesters are needed. Exception requests will be reviewed by a committee. Approval is not guaranteed. Students whose exception requests are approved and who do not meet the eligibility requirements by the extended deadline will be required to change majors.
The Continuing Eligibility Criteria will be evaluated during the Advanced Standing Conference. Students can schedule their Advanced Standing Conference using the Academic Advising Scheduling Calendar. New appointments for Advanced Standing Conferences will be posted each Monday for the following week during the Advanced Standing season. Note that standard drop-in advising availability will not meet the requirement for an Advanced Standing Conference.
During this specialized Academic Advising appointment, held in either September or February, students' eligibility to progress will be determined. If it is determined that the student does not meet the continuing eligibility requirements, their academic advisor will work with them to determine whether eligibility can be achieved or to transfer the student to a different major.
Students deemed eligible will receive notification the following month of their BSN placement and start term. Eligible students must complete any in-progress prerequisite coursework with a grade of B or higher to retain their placement.
