Nonpharmacological Pain Intervention In Older Adults with Cognitive Impairment

Dr. Park is a social work faculty member and researcher. Her research focuses on pain and nonpharmacological pain management for older adults with chronic conditions. Dr. Park’s research interest was inspired by clinical experience as a social worker in a community mental health setting. She observed that many older adults with chronic pain misused or abused opioids and benzodiazepines due to sleep problems due to pain, resulting in hospital admissions due to drug adverse effects. This experience led to her interest in opioid medication misuse and abuse in older adults with chronic pain and pain-related disorders, such as musculoskeletal disorders (e.g., osteoarthritis) and neuropathic disorders (e.g., peripheral neuropathy). She has conducted the effects of mind-body intervention to manage chronic pain and improve physical function and psychological well-being in older adults with chronic conditions (i.e., osteoarthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, and other dementias). She was recognized as a Hartford Faculty Scholar (Cohort XII) and received funding from the John A. Hartford Foundation to conduct research entitled Utilization of Nonpharmaco-logical Pain Management Among Racially and Ethnically Diverse Older Adults in South Florida. She is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America. Dr. Park serves as Chair of the Healthy Aging Academy, where she trains students in the geriatric field and provides workshops in the community. In particular, the Academy has developed a partnership with local long-term care facilities.
