Research Journey: Understanding the Heart and the Mind in Complex Congenital Heart Disease
BIO: Dr. Pike is a Professor and Director of Research at UCLA School of Nursing, Los Angeles, California, USA. She is also the coordinator in the Pediatric Advanced Practice Program. She has a 27-year career as a nurse practitioner and practices clinically in pediatric cardiothoracic surgery at Children’s Hospital, Los Angeles. She has received numerous accolades as a researcher, teacher, mentor and clinician. Her biobehavioral and neuroimaging program of research has received several NIH/NINR funded grants to study structural brain injury, cerebral blood flow and its correlations to cognitive and psychosocial outcomes in adolescents and young adults with complex congenital heart disease (CHD), in particular, single ventricle heart disease. She was the first to use a cutting-edge computer-based cognitive intervention to improve working memory and ultimate executive function skills in transitional age youth with complex CHD. Dr. Pike is a fellow in the American Heart Association and the American Academy of Nursing. She is the current co-lead for the research committee of the Fontan Outcomes Network and serves as Vice Chair/Chair Elect for the American Heart Association Council of Cardiovascular and Stroke Nursing.
