“Improving Prenatal Care in an Underserved Population”

Laura Maurer has been involved in perinatal nursing and advocacy since 1989, when she started a peer support group in Arizona for mothers with high-risk pregnancies, which became national in 1992. Since that time, she has obtained her RN, BSN, MSN-Ed, post-masters FNP, and Doctor of Nursing Practice. Laura has worked at a level III Labor and Delivery unit for 26 years, caring for both low and high-risk pregnancies. She has had the privilege of educating many nursing students and sharing her love and commitment to the nursing profession through teaching at several universities.

Laura has served on multiple committees dedicated to serving and improving maternal health in Arizona. She has been a member of the Association of Women’s Health Obstetrics and Neonatal Nursing (AWHONN) since 1996. She has been able to speak at several conferences and present several research project posters focusing on maternal health and underserved populations locally and nationally.

Laura currently practices as a full-spectrum family nurse practitioner at the Wesley Community and Health Center. Wesley is a Federally Qualified Health Center with a unique primary care setting that allows her to practice “womb to tomb” care. Her commitment to evidence-based practice for prevention, chronic care management, and prenatal care allows her to precept nurse practitioner students in a setting of care, compassion, and service to our most vulnerable patients.

Laura is currently completing post-intervention data collection as an extension of her Doctor of Nursing Practice project with the intention of publishing in 2024. She has found a love of research during her Doctoral program and is looking forward to completing more projects in the future.
