BSN-IH ATI Policy

The University of Arizona College of Nursing cares about your successful completion of the program of study as well as your readiness and preparation for the NCLEX-RN® licensing exam.

The BSN-IH program utilizes Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI)® as our progression marking product to ensure your success on the NCLEX-RN®.

Throughout your program you will be completing both practice and proctored assessments to ensure your readiness. The following content mastery series (CMS) assessments will be taken throughout your program of study to best prepare you for licensing as a registered nurse:

  • Maternal-Newborn
  • Mental Health
  • Nursing Care of Children
  • Nutrition
  • Pharmacology

ATI® helps track your progress through a product called "ATI Pulse"® (explained in detail below). In your final semester, you will complete a comprehensive predictor (CP) exam that is based upon the current NCLEX-RN® test plan. The pulse and the CP assessment will provide you with details and the probability of passing the NCLEX-RN® exam.

Students: When you have read this policy, print, sign the BSN-IH ATI® Assessment Review and Policy Student Acknowledgment (PDF) and upload to the D2L NURS 370 per faculty instructions.

 

What is ATI®?

  • Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI)® offers an assessment driven review program designed to enhance student NCLEX-RN® success.
  • The comprehensive program offers multiple assessment and remediation activities. These include assessment indicators for academic success, critical thinking, and learning styles, online tutorials, online practice testing, and proctored testing over the major content areas in nursing. These ATI® tools, in combination with the nursing program content, assist students to prepare more efficiently, as well as increase confidence and familiarity with nursing content.
  • Data from student testing and remediation can be used for program’s quality improvement and outcome evaluation.
  • ATI® information and orientation resources can be accessed from your student home page from the “My ATI”® tab. It is highly recommended that you spend time navigating through these orientation materials.

What products are available to me?

Faculty highly encourage the completion of the ATI Self-Assessment Inventory (195 questions) for students to learn more about their learning styles and ways to be more successful on the ATI assessments and NCLEX-RN.

Review Modules/Books

ATI® provides Review Modules in eBook formats that include written and video materials in key content areas. Students are encouraged to use these modules to supplement course work and reading. Instructors may assign chapter reading either during a given course and/or as part of active learning/remediation following assessments.

Tutorials

ATI® offers unique Tutorials that are designed to teach nursing students how to think like a nurse, how to take a nursing assessment, and how to make sound clinical decisions. Nurse Logic is an excellent way to learn the basics of how nurses think and make decisions. Learning System offers practice tests in specific nursing content areas that allow students to apply the valuable learning tools from Nurse Logic. Features such as a Hint Button, a Talking Glossary, and a Critical Thinking Guide are embedded throughout the Learning System tests to help students gain an understanding of the content.

Assessment

There are practice assessments available for students as well as standardized proctored assessments that may be scheduled during courses. These assessments will help the student to identify what they know as well as areas requiring remediation called Topics to Review.

Focused Reviews/Active Learning/Remediation

Active Learning/Remediation is a process of reviewing content in an area that was not learned or not fully understood (as determined on an ATI® assessment). Remediation tools are intended to help the student review important information to be successful in courses and on the NCLEX-RN®. The student’s individual assessment report will contain a listing of the Topics to Review. It is required to remediate using the Focused Review after completion of any practice/proctored tests, which contains links to ATI® eBooks, media clips, and active learning templates. The instructor has online access to detailed information about the timing and duration of time spent in assessments, focused reviews, and tutorials by each student. Students can provide documentation that required ATI® work was completed using the “My Transcript” feature under “My Results” of the ATI® Student Home Page or by submitting handwritten Remediation Templates (not electronic) as required. Please submit PDF or Word files or contact your faculty for questions about file type.

Student Responsibilities

  • Students who do not complete the assigned proctored assessment will earn an Incomplete in the course and will not progress to the following level.
  • Students are not eligible to graduate until all required courses have been satisfactorily completed.
  • Students will use the content-specific practice assessments to determine their baseline knowledge of the content.       
  • Students must average a 70% or greater on course examinations to successfully pass a course in the BSN-IH program, excluding ATI® assessments.
  • Students are encouraged to use the ATI® Pulse feature to assess their readiness for the NCLEX-RN®.

What is ATI® Pulse?

The ATI® Pulse model provides a predicted probability of passing the NCLEX-RN® that is based on a student’s current and historic performance across several proctored ATI® assessments. The ATI® Pulse model also provides associated risk categories (low, medium, or high) and highlights remediation needs to ensure a successful pass on the NCLEX-RN®.

NurseLogic 2.0                      

  • NurseLogic 2.0 will be completed in NURS 370 Integrative Health/Wellbeing Assessment and Promotion. 
    • NurseLogic 2.0 includes the following four modules on knowledge and clinical judgment, nursing concepts, priority setting, and testing and remediation.
  • Students are to complete the beginning (or beginner) level in NURS 370 (assignment points per syllabus).

Practice Assessments (All Levels)

  • The ATI® Reporting Dashboard provides an Assessment tab. Students may click on this tab to obtain their individual performance on the practice assessments.
  • Students will complete the assigned proctored assessment in accordance with the NHE Exam Policy. Approximately 1.5 minutes per item will be allowed on all practice assessments. Total assessment time will depend on the number of items.
  • Students must attend proctored practice assessments and complete remediation to earn up to 2% for each practice assessment.
  • Late Assignment Policy will apply to remediation work submitted after the due date and time.

Practice Assessments Remediation (All Levels)

Complete the remediation in order:

  1. Review ATI individual performance profile (IPP) results.
  2. Complete focused review utilizing the “Topics to Review” section in the IPP report.
  3. Complete active learning templates based on the criteria in the table below.

    2. Templates must be handwritten (not electronic) and focus on the specific content missed.
    3. Templates must include a student name and date.
    4. An example of an acceptable handwritten active learning template for a missed medication question would be to fully complete the Medication active learning template and address the reason why the question was missed (i.e., missing medication right, missing patient education, etc.) (no electronic submissions will be accepted). 
      1. Example: Evaluating client understanding of prednisone. The active learning template should address prednisone and specifically address client understanding.
    5. Include the following statement in each template: “I missed this question because …….”. Provide a summary of the content you acquired (cite the sources).
      1. Example: “I missed this question because I did not know that I needed to teach a patient taking prednisone about the importance of blood glucose monitoring because corticosteroids increased blood glucose” (Hoffman & Sullivan, 2020).
  2. Use ATI, course textbooks, and other scholarly resources. Please cite the specific resources utilized. Include full reference at the bottom of the template or on a separate page. Students must complete the focused review quiz (if triggered).
  3. Download the IPP report, highlight the content areas and items addressed in the active learning templates. The report must include the focused review time and the focused review quiz score.
  4. Submit the highlighted IPP report and the active learning templates via D2L per faculty instructions.

Proctored Assessments (All Levels)

  • Students will complete the assigned proctored assessment in accordance with the NHE Exam Policy.
  • The percentage that can be earned by completing the proctored assessment and remediation is 6% per course.

Proctored Assessments Remediation (All Levels, Excluding NURS 479)

Complete the remediation in order:

  1. Review ATI individual performance profile (IPP) results.
  2. Complete focused review utilizing the “Topics to Review” section in the IPP report.
  3. Complete active learning templates based on the criteria in the table below.

Comprehensive Predictor Proctored Assessment (NURS 479)

Students will complete the comprehensive predictor proctored assessment in their final semester, NURS 479 Transition to the Professional Nursing Role.

The maximum percentage that can be earned by completing the comprehensive predictor proctored assessment with remediation is 6%. The following percentages will be earned:

  • Students must score a predicted probability of passing NCLEX-RN® of 95.0% or higher on the comprehensive predictor proctored assessment and complete 1 hour of remediation to earn 6% of the total course points.
  • Students must score a predicted probability of passing NCLEX-RN® of 90.0% to 94.99% on the assigned comprehensive predictor proctored assessment and complete a minimum of 2 hours of remediation to earn 5% of the total course points.
  • Students must score a predicted probability of passing NCLEX-RN® between 70.0% to 89.99% on the assigned comprehensive predictor proctored assessment and complete a minimum of 3 hours of remediation and retake the Comprehensive Predictor Proctored Assessment to earn 4% of the total course points.
  • Students who score at or below 69.99% will earn 0% of the total course points must complete 4 hours of remediation activities and retake the Comprehensive Predictor Proctored Assessment for a total of 3% of the total course points.

  • Students are required to take the comprehensive predictor proctored assessment.
  • Students who do not complete the assigned comprehensive predictor proctored assessment(s) will earn an Incomplete in the course and will not complete the level.
  • Students who do not complete the required remediation will earn 0% of the total comprehensive predictor course points. Students requiring remediation must complete the remediation for each assessment attempt per score.
  • Students who score 90% or better may complete the retake as practice preparation for the NCLEX-RN®, however, this is not required and no change in the first score or additional remediation points for the retake will be provided.
  • Students who score 89.99% or below are required to complete the comprehensive predictor proctored assessment retake. Credit for the initial comprehensive predictor proctored assessment score will remain the same.
  • Students who’s score increased probability of passing by 10% or better on the retake and complete the required remediation will earn 1% of the total course points.
  • Students are not eligible to graduate until all required courses have been satisfactorily completed.
