Applying Bioanthropological Frameworks to Development and Health Across the Lifecourse
Summary: Dr. Julienne Rutherford is an Associate Professor and Associate Department Head of Human Development Nursing Science in the College of Nursing at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is a biological anthropologist whose work integrates bioanthropological theory with biomedical science. For 20 years, Dr. Rutherford has sustained a program of research exploring the intrauterine environment as a biosocial determinant of health. She studies how maternal life history and lived experience shape this earliest developmental setting, and how, in turn, the intrauterine environment influences growth, health, and development across the life course and across generations. Dr. Rutherford has been the Principal Investigator or co-investigator on federally funded grants totaling more than $6M. She has produced 45 publications, 61 conference presentations, dozens of invited talks, and multiple plenary and keynote addresses at national and international meetings. In addition, Dr. Rutherford has received multiple awards for her research, and has been recognized as a teacher and mentor of nursing students and faculty.
