"Post-Intensive Care Syndrome Trauma Patients after Discharge: Embracing New Vulnerabilities”

After serving in the US ARMY as a Military Intelligence professional, Dr. Jennifer Hunter switched careers from database development and system analysis to Nursing. She earned her Associates in Nursing from Cochise College in 2010 and Bachelors in Nursing at Wayland Baptist University in 2011. She completed her dual MSN/DNP with the University of Arizona in 2014.  Dr. Hunter is currently completing a Surgical First Assist program with the National Institute of First Assisting. Dr. Hunter will use this new certification to build a better understanding of the surgical continuum for Trauma and Burn patients experience and thereby develop a better recovery and discharge plan.

Dr. Hunter has worked as a Trauma Nurse Practitioner since 2016 in multiple Level 1 facilities, full-time and PRN, in the Trauma ER and Trauma/Surgical ICU in Arizona. She has mentored many medical residents, entry level physicians, and nurse practitioner students over her career and discovered a love for teaching.  Dr. Hunter has been a Limited Term Adjunct Faculty at the University of Arizona since 2017.   She has served as a Clinical Supervising Faculty and has taught NURS684 Adult-Gerontology Traumatic Injury and Emergent Illness Diagnosis & Management since 2018. Dr. Hunter assisted as course Co-Chair for NURS616 Adult-Gerontology Diagnosis and Management of Chronic and Acute Illness in Summer 2022.

Dr. Hunter has engaged in quality improvement projects for creating a Post Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) Clinic in Arizona and designing a comprehensive checklist for transitioning a patient from the Trauma ICU to the Operating Room and returning. The checklist project was presented to the American College of Surgeons in September 2021 and implemented late 2021 in an ICU in Chandler, AZ. Dr. Hunter will expand upon the PICS project in her presentation.
