The College of Nursing has received a prestigious National Institutes of Health (NIH) T32 institutional training grant, a significant milestone that recognizes the college's nationally competitive research environment and its commitment to preparing the next generation of nurse scientists. The NIH grant provides $1,005,640 over five years to support the college’s new Training in Health Research for Innovative Vital Healthcare (THRIVE) award. The funding will support four doctoral students in the Nursing PhD program each year by reducing financial barriers, enabling them to focus on their doctoral education and scientific training.

Become an Independent Nurse Scientist

The THRIVE fellowship emphasizes foundational research methods, hands-on research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and career development. You'll work alongside the college’s nationally recognized faculty mentors to develop the expertise to lead innovative nursing and translational research addressing some of the nation's most pressing health challenges. As a nurse scientist, you will generate evidence that informs clinical practice, shapes health policy, and advances solutions to complex health challenges.

In the THRIVE program, doctoral nursing students receive specialized training in community-engaged research to improve the health and well-being of populations facing diverse health challenges. THRIVE students receive:

  • Tuition and fee support
  • Annual student stipend
  • Paid research-related expenses
  • Travel funds
  • Childcare support

Eligibility and Application Information

  • Is this grant only for first-year PhD students?
    No. Year 2 PhD students can apply, but they must complete the required T32 coursework, which may include additional classes they had not previously planned to take. Dual PhD/DNP students are not eligible unless they choose to enroll and complete each degree separately. 
  • How many years does the grant cover?
    Up to four years.
  • What is the funding per PhD student?
    Funding per student varies and is calculated depending on when they start and end the PhD program.  
  • When are the application periods open and closed?
    There will be two application periods. The first is currently open, with applications reviewed beginning Sept. 15. A second round of application reviews will begin in late September and continue through the fourth week of October. The exact review date for the second round is still to be determined. 
  • How many candidates are selected each year?
    The program can support four students at a time. Most students will continue to receive support as they progress through the program. Continued support or reappointment is based on successful program progression and annual scholarly achievements aligned with the goals of the T32 program.

  • How are students matched with a mentor?
    Students are responsible for reaching out to and establishing a relationship with a faculty mentor before applying. The program does not match students with mentors after acceptance. The strength of the mentor-mentee relationship is considered as part of the application review.

  • Student Outcomes: Upon completing the program, trainees will be able to: 1) apply the skills, knowledge, and professional networks they build during the program to conduct high-impact research with populations with a wide variety of health challenges; 2) develop, adapt, disseminate, and/or test primary and secondary prevention interventions that are sensitive to interpersonal, family, community, and/or healthcare systems; and 3) use advanced designs and approaches to conduct rigorous research to improve health outcomes.
